DAY 4 Palmolive Kitesurf World Cup 2010

Jul-20-2010

Warm temperature and sunny skies for the fourth day of competition

Today’s weather forecast was truly a gift, sunny blue skies and temperatures so hot you could fry an egg on the hood of any car. Hundreds of spectators were out and about on the beach in hopes of getting a glimpse of the professional rides that consumed the coastline.

Racers made their way out on the water just after 11:00am this morning. A total of three races were completed today under light winds, which gradually increased throughout the midday hours. Bruno Sroka (Cabrinha, FRA) took first place in the first race of the day however finished second in the last two races. Rolf Van Der Vlught (Airush, NED) managed to finish first in the second race of the day as well as second in the first race but ran into some difficulties in the last race of the day, which led him to fourth place. French rider Julien Kerneur (Takoon, FRA) has been riding with great strategies the last races earning him yet again a first place position in the last race of the day. Kerneur came close to overtaking a couple competitors that were in the lead but failed, which left him behind in third place for the first two races of the day. Brazilian racer, Pedro Montenegro (Best, BRA) would not give up the fight for a top three placement and managed to finish in third place in the last race of the day.

In the women’s division, Steph Bridge (North, GBR) managed to finish first in the first race of the day, and earned a second and third place position in the following two races. Nayara Licarinoo (Best, BRA) finished first in the second race of the day and managed to stay in second place in the first and last race of the day. French rider Caroline Adrien (Cabrinha, FRA) has proved that she is not going down without a fight as she rushed past the finish line first in the last race of the day, followed closely in second Licarinoo while Bridge finished third.

After a short lunch break, race director Olaf Van Tol announced that he would start the women’s freestyle single eliminations with four man heats, meaning four competitors out on the water at the same time. In the first heat of the day Bruna Kajiya (Flexifoil, BRA) as well as Asia Litwin (Nobile, POL) managed to make their way into the next round. In the second heat of the day, Karolina Winkowska (Slingshot, POL) as well as Hannah Whiteley (JN Kites, GBR) moved on to the second round. During the third heat of the day, Holly Kennedy (North, GBR) was disqualified minutes into her heat against Sofia Lennartsson (Ozone, SWE) due to a line tangle with Kari Schibevaag (Ozone, NOR) whom was competing against Angela Peral (North, ESP). Lenartsson automatically moves on to the second round. Due to the line entanglement, the heat between Schibevaag and Peral was rerun but ended in abandonment due to the diminishing winds, which made it impossible for the women to perform any freestyle tricks.

Tomorrow’s mandatory skippers’ meeting is scheduled for 8:30am.
